Work Package Objectives:
Description of work D5.1 and D5.3 The key stage of the WP for this project is to optimise the various versions of the UoM non-Newtonian CFD code to run on the STFC computational facilities. A secure data flow mechanism will be created to provide remote submission and monitoring to simplify the batch processing and aid in the initial analysis of the simulations. This is putting the human in the computational loop. D5.2 A second role carried out by DL is in compositing the computational reconstructed simulation with the experimental Electrical Resistance Tomography results allowing feature scale comparison to occur. It is proposed that this will aid in the development of improvements within the complete design cycle. Specialist High Performance visualisation machines are indirectly linked to the simulation data storage devices and will allow side-by-side comparisons with the simulations to occur as soon as possible: resulting in D5.3. |
Equipment and Facilities · 50% of the resources are there to fund the use of Hartree computation and visualisation facilities. This is available and will be managed by the DL team. There are periods of maintenance etc., which will be managed to gain efficient use of the system. |

Objectives |
Unilever - New workflow that accelerates product innovation in R&D. Must have - Experimental data set with Newtonian, non-Newtonian models followed by emulsion or other product (eg Hair conditioner) - Benchmarking of Sonolator against CDDM. - Incorporating the mixer into a filler to increase responsiveness and reduce waste in conventional manufacturing. Demonstrator - design & optimisation of a mixing platform for a point of sale machine for personalised products. |
CDDMtec - Scale-up rules for CDDM design - Experimental data set for CDDM with Newtonian, non-Newtonian models followed by emulsion or other product. - Demonstrator – emulsions would fit |
UoM - New modelling for multiscale physics problems. Particular challenges for CDDM may include wall effects, evolving rheology, transitional flow, separating flows. - New imaging techniques (eg RAL capabilities) or extension of own expertise in ERT |
Daresbury - Prototyping of closed loop design incorporating CFD, tomography visualisation of flows. - New imaging techniques (eg RAL) |
Ctech - Provide top quality project management & administrative support |
Action All 2nd level plan contribution by 14th July |
Complete 2nd level plan as circulated by Ed. Individual responsibilities are as follows and includes liaison with other interested parties WP1 – Ctech WP2 – UL WP3 - CDDMtec WP4 – UoM WP5 – Daresbury WP6 – UL For each WP - a few deliverables are required (maybe up to 7) - milestones which bring together deliverables for different WP and at end of WP |
