CCP Executive Summary, last six months: June 2016-November 2016

Networking and funding activities:

  • There have been two visitor exchanges as short-term fellows receiving amounts of travel/subsistence money (second one currently being written-up).
  • Three Software Events and other events including the STIR Users and Developers' meeting
  • Two seminars
  • A Public Engagement event
  • Training course.

We now have 84 members on the CCP-PETMR (14 DEVEL and 61 USERS) email list (some may be dormant).

Software development by EO continues with embedding (visits) to London and also to Manchester.

Eight items include software and training events:

  • 6 June 2016 8th PET-MR Software Framework meeting: 10:30am to 12:30pm. The event was held in the same location as the CCP PET-MR working group meeting scheduled for the afternoon of the 6th June. Attendance Joint Meeting - 20 (16 Physically + 4 Skype)
  • 3 August 2016: 9th PET-MR Software Meeting, UCL, 13.30-16.00 (lunch from 13.00) combined with talk by prof. Rich Carson (Yale PET Center) at UCL 17.00 and before an Exec Meeting. Attendance - 17 (12 physically + 5 Skype)
  • .... Seminar was also well attended (21)
  • Advertised: KCL course for PETMR 29-31 June 2016 Simultaneous PET-MR: Technology and Applications Attendance
  • Sep 7: PETMR informal gathering for those attending ISMRM-BC, Leeds 11.00-12.00. combined with PET/MR educational workshop and the 22nd Annual Scientific Meeting of the British Chapter of the ISMRM in Leeds. Attendance requested 73 (9 speakers)
  • 21 September 2016: 10th PET-MR Software Meeting, UCL, morning (10.00-12.00) combined with UCL PET/MR Symposium 21-23 September 2016 Attendace 24 (23 Physically and one by Skype)
  • 3 November 2016: STIR Users' & Developers’ Meeting This year the event will take place on Thursday, 3 November, 19:00-21:00 in Strasbourg (France) during the IEEE NSS-MIC ( - Room Varsovie, Palais de la Musique et des Congrès. Attendance 47 (6 speakers)
  • Advertised: 9 November 2016 Seminar: Dual-tracer 18F-FDG:18F-NaF PET/MR for quantitative multi-parametric cardiovascular imaging Speaker: Dr. Nicolas A Karakatsanis from the Translational and Molecular Imaging Institute, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York. PET imaging seminar that will take place at the University of Leeds (Seminar Room 8.34b, Worsley Building, Clarendon Way, LS2 9NL) at 12-1pm. Attendance

Public Engagement event with Manchester MRI

  • One 'fun' event was Manchester Brain Box with MRI brain data shown on the touchcreens persentations 19 June 2016 Total through the Town Hall was in excess of 5400: 90 people crawled through the 'pretend' MRI scanner and received a scanned image of 'their' brain.

Website refreshed and data archives in use (zenodo and dropbox for business are now available).

Next Meetings: 14 November 2016 CCP PETMR Working Group Meeting 13:30 to 15:30 with improved architecture structure to also be discussed at the 11th Software Metting 15:45-17:15. Both meetings will be held in London (Institute of Education)

Coding Milestones from the core SLA funds: To be discussed.

Current set for 2016-2017 are:

  1. Website, mailing lists, source code and data archives
  2. Organise working group meeting and other event sessions
  3. Support current training courses and organise developer workshop to teach
  4. Populate database for both simulated and acquired data
  5. Visit sites in the network to gain experience with a few selected packages for image reconstruction. Embedding with the main groups STIR and Gadgetron
  6. STIR code - API release (MATLAB or python)
  7. Gadgetron code - API release (MATLAB or python)
  8. NEW Continuous build system for software testing
  9. Optional: STIR and Gadgetron combined release
  10. Optional: Profiling and (if necessary speed-up) of 1 PET and 1 MR image reconstruction package .
  11. Optional: Creation and maintenance of test-cases of PET/MR data and reconstruction - release in 2017

We need to agree on new Milestones (possibly carry forward these) for next year, after 1 April 2017. This has involved about 1.2FTE - recruitment is in process as there has been a 0.33FTE underspend last year.

Reminder we are asked to collect statistics on training days (at PhD level) and presentations by SCD/STFC staff and publications connected to SCD/STFC staff.

Possible Future actions to coordinate

CoI / PI / Working Group support is to be requested to guide in this effort:

  • Workshop: “Quant Across Scales - Link to CCP5 and CCP-EM” (John Purton, Martyn Winn, etc) and Rich Tomography proposal (Christopher Egen, Bob Cernic, Daniil Kazantsev etc)
  • EU COST grant: application for 2017
  • ...
