What I did wrong...

OK, I have to admit that on 29th September 2009 I trashed the portage on this system. I wanted to install OpenOffice 3.0 so did emerge -sync. A few minutes later I could no longer install any software. Apparently this is because I had not upgraded sufficiently often, the problem and possible solution are explained on the blog page below. The reason I had not done this was because this laptop overheats when running the compiler. I now know that I can restrict the cpu speed to get around this fault by typing "cpufreq-set -u 800" so that is stays at 800MHz.
