What Real Researchers Want (from their Institutional Environment)

Derek Sergeant

To start the eResearch ball rolling at University of Leeds the EVIE project conducted a three phase User Requirement Analysis exercise. In the first phase a lifecycle of research activities which Leeds' researchers follow (in a loose sense) was elicited, and this lifecycle was then tested during phase two. Phase three used an online survey to rank the various aspects of research activity structured around the lifecycle, to decide what the majority of researchers wanted the most. Of course the EVIE project tried to be neutral throughout. This presentation will present the exercise and the rationale behind the process. The results and rankings across the lifecycle will be shown and annotated, with various breakdown and insight notes. Things will then be wrapped up into a whistle stop tour of turning these into a plan for technical delivery of a prototype VRE, through to a rapid demonstration of the portal implemented as a result.
