Abstract
Institutional repositories feature strongly in open access developments across the world,
but arguably the first successful repository was subject-based (i.e. Arxiv)
and some subject communities continue to favour a subject approach, as in
the UKPMC development. What are the respective advantages to researchers of
the institutional or the subject approach to repository development? The
ability to link to related text and to data are likely to be significant
factors. Hopefully harvesting systems will enable researchers to have the
best of both institutional and subject worlds, but some communities will
continue to give priority to one or the other approach.
